God and Concrete

Going into this week, I thought I knew what to expect. I knew that I would love the different culture and the experience of the week. I knew that I would love the food and the market and the cenote and especially VBS. I knew I would love the people and the 1 on 1’s and all the new friends just waiting to be made. But I also dreaded doing all the construction work. I thought to myself, “I’ll just try to get through the construction aspect of the trip because I know I’m gonna love the rest of the week.” But something completely different happened. Of course, doing the construction was still difficult, but the more I worked, the more I kept wanting to help. And the end of the first work day, all I wanted to do was to get back to moving buckets of wet cement and serve the Lord by helping build the floor of a school. The next two days of hard work, God was within our whole team as we built the floor of a school and the roof of a church, and I could feel His presence with every swing of a bucket. I’ve never had more scrapes and burns and bruises on my arms and legs. I’ve never been so sore, and I’ve definitely never worked that hard in my life. But I’ve also never felt so rewarded. The Lord opened my heart this week by tearing down my expectations and building something more beautiful and incredible that I could’ve ever imagined. As we go into our last work day tomorrow, I know that He will be our strength as we finish constructing the roof of a church in a small village. There are no words to describe the feeling of serving the Lord by bringing others close to him.

“God is our place of safety. He gives us strength. He is always there to help us in times of trouble. The earth may fall apart. The mountains may fall in the middle of the sea. But we will not be afraid. God’s blessings are like a river. They fill the city of God with joy.”

Psalm 46: 1-4

Gettin’ down at dinner

After a short rest from soccer with the incredible host church, our team went to dinner, however, it was no ordinary dinner. A band arrived at the outdoor restaurant and of course, our team rose to the occasion…literally! I have some video and will try to upload that as well…what a night! Tomorrow the real work begins! Though it will be extremely challenging, we are trusting God to work through us to get this done! We are so excited!
